Terrain is a property of every platform in Melee and Brawl. Each type of terrain has its own footstep noises, as well as changing how often certain Pikmin are plucked. It's currently believed that there are no terrain differences in SSB64.

Note: The frequencies are how the game picks things. The percentages are the math of how things work out; watch for rounding errors.

Melee terrains

None of them have an effect on gameplay outside of cosmetics, with the exception of ice and other slippery surfaces.

Terrain Index Description
0 Basic The default terrain type.
1 Rock Stone.
2 Grass/Leaves Plant material.
3 Dirt Uncovered earth.
4 Wood Tree.
5 Light metal Thin metal objects.
6 Heavy metal Thick metal objects.
7 ??? Appears on Flat Zone, but debug mode doesn't show where.
8 Alien goop The stuff on Brinstar.
10 Water Shallow water.
12 Glass The lights of Brinstar Depths and the Fourside UFO.
16 G&W Makes up most of Flat Zone.
18 Checkered Green Greens' blue-and-white platforms.

Brawl terrains

The frequency of different types of Pikmin is based on the type of terrain that Olimar is standing on. Note: The frequencies are how the game picks things. The percentages are the math of how things work out; watch for rounding errors.
